課程概述

We live in a world where we do science and also should be moral. For Kant these were two very different things, one about what is, the world as it is given in our objective experiences; the other about what ought to be, the social and moral world that we make ourselves. He dealt with the first in his “theoretical” philosophy (First Critique) and with the second in his “practical” philosophy (Second Critique and Groundwork for Metaphysics of Morals). But with our bodies and our feelings, wishes, and actions we are also part of this given world. Hence the two cannot easily be separated. For Kant this created a tension, and some of this tension is still felt today. We cannot change the laws of the natural sciences. We discover them. But we can change our cultural, social, and moral rules. We make them. Both, theoretical and practical knowledge are distinctive to our human nature. Hence this course is an enquiry into our human nature. We will read Henry Allison’s book Kant’s Theory of Freedom, 1990. The book provides insights into Kant’s theory of freedom from both his theoretical and practical philosophy, including questions about autonomy, duty, inclination, respect, virtue, will, and radical evil. It leads into the heart of Kant’s transcendental philosophy. This is a challenging course, because it is an enquiry deep into our human nature and it aims at understanding Kant’s philosophy as a whole.

課程目標
The course objective is to arrive at an understanding of Kant’s transcendental philosophy from his first Critique in connection with his moral philosophy. The course introduces the conceptions and ways of thinking at Kant’s time, especially in Germany. Such an understanding is necessary to read other philosophers that followed Kant and were more or less influenced by him, such as Hegel, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Heidegger, Sartre, and many others until today. Especially Kant’s moral philosophy is still influential in current discussions today, also in analytic philosophy.

Our main text is:
Henry Allison: Kant’s Theory of Freedom, CUP 1990. We will also use parts of Allison’s more recent 2012 book (see below).
For texts from Kant we use the translations of the Cambridge Edition or any other translation that Allison relies upon or that we find suitable. For the first Critique in particular, I suggest Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, translated by Kemp Smith, 1929 (available in Taiwan).
